NEWTON CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE BRYAN BARASH ENDORSED
BY MAJORITY OF CURRENT CITY COUNCIL

Barash is endorsed by the majority of the current City Council and School Committee,
adding to his total of over 40 current and former Newton elected officials

NEWTON, MA, January 22, 2021 — With just over seven weeks until Newton’s March 16th special election, progressive City Council candidate Bryan Barash has been endorsed by 14 of the 22 current City Councilors, including the entire City Council leadership: City Council President Susan Albright, Vice President Rick Lipof, and all six standing committee chairs. These endorsements add to the growing list of over 40 current and former Newton elected officials who enthusiastically support Barash.

City Council President Susan Albright said of Barash, “Bryan’s experience in the State Senate and proven dedication to public service will make him an invaluable force for progress in Newton. I have seen firsthand his dedication to making Newton a better city.”

Barash is a longtime activist who currently serves as General Counsel to State Senate President Emerita Harriette Chandler. A graduate of Boston College Law School, Barash is seeking the Ward 2 At-Large seat recently vacated by Congressman Jake Auchincloss, which means all Newton residents can vote in this election. Barash serves on the Newton Human Rights Commission and is a board member for a number of local nonprofits. His priorities include environmental sustainability, affordable housing, racial justice, and supporting public schools.

“I am honored to have the support of so many of our elected leaders,” Barash said. “Their faith in me reinforces my readiness to hit the ground running and make an impact on day one.”

Barash’s broad support is evidenced by additional endorsements, including former State Treasurer Steve Grossman, former gubernatorial candidates Don Berwick and Bob Massie, State Representative Tommy Vitolo, Framingham Mayor Yvonne Spicer, and former congressional candidate Jesse Mermell. The Bay State Stonewall Democrats, Engine 6, and 12 labor unions have also backed Barash’s candidacy.

Mermell said of Barash’s extensive experience: “Bryan is the proven progressive Newton needs at this crucial moment. I've seen his work up close both in the State House and in the City, and I know that he will lead Newton to a more sustainable and just future.”

The number and diversity of endorsements emphasize that Barash has the experience and values to lead in these difficult times.
